L’art pour l’art – or for the money?
Porvoo is known for its business wisdom, but for arts and crafts as well. The second issue of Riverå Magazine, Studio Porvoo, celebrates studios of all sorts in the economy of Porvoo, which was creative long before the concept existed. Be it an atelier, residence, or a venue for collaborative work and innovation, studio is a place where the results of creativity take place. So step into the creative spaces of the city, and meet these fellow locals, for whom beauty and reason go hand in hand.
FROM HIGH-TECH TO HIGH JAZZ
Yritysmaailmalla olisi paljon opittavaa luovien alojen toimijoilta, sanoo Antti Ansas, joka tunnetaan sekä teknologia-alojen startupeista että porvoolaisen jazzin rahoituksen rakentajana
Are hubs only for startups, or could business people and creatives share the same workspace? In Antti Ansas’ opinion, yes. Being a partner and an investor in many high-tech companies, Ansas is also known for keeping Porvoo Jazz Festival alive and kicking for ten years. Strange enough, Ansas didn’t even like jazz ten years ago. However, he was influenced by his university professor Alf Rehn, who taught him what business leaders could learn from jazz musicians. A sportif guy with an army background took notes, and now he is the biggest fan of recruiting people with creative portfolios.
TROPICAL MELANCHOLIA
Kuvataiteilija Fanny Tavastilan töissä yhdistyvät tutut huoneet ja kaukaiset maisemat. Kohta niiden salaperäistä tunnelmaa saa ihailla myös Steven Hollin Newil&Baulle suunnittelemissa luksuskodeissa Helsingissä.
New York, Berlin, Porvoo. When Fanny Tavastila’s tropical landscapes of sorrow and hope are exhibited in town, everybody knows about it. But Tavastila — having her studio in the well-known artist community of Cable Factory, Helsinki — is not only an visual artist. She is curating as well, and many of the exhibitions take place outside the institutions of art world. Loving creative collaborations in any field of industry, Tavastila is longing for deeper synergy between arts, sciences, and business. Now she practices what she preaches in Meander House together with the builder, Newil&Bau, and Steven Holl, a visionary architect behind the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma, Helsinki.
SQUARE IS THE NEW BLACK
Creative hub -ajattelusta innostuneelle Erkka Hirvoselle luovuus merkitsee pitkän aikavälin tuottoa neliöille. Siksi hän haluaa design-hotellistaan kilpaillun alustan suomalaisen taiteen nimekkäimmille tekijöille.
Erkka Hirvonen is a hotel owner and COO craving for art, and therefore his Runo Hotel Porvoo wants to be a national leader in the accommodation business related to arts and design. Runo Hotel Porvoo does not only provide a biannual art exhibition for its visitors, but aims to be a platform for ongoing artistic activities that create value for ambitious artists, hotel clients and investors, and the city. In the real estate business, it’s not a typical way of thinking about making profit, but Hirvonen claims that in the long run, beauty and aesthetics are the only things having lasting value, also in terms of property.

THE NEW COLLECTORS
Kati, Elina ja Risto maksavat mielellään taiteesta. Koska sattuvat tykkäämään siitä.
Kati, Elina and Risto don’t consider themselves investors, when it comes to art. However, when they see a piece of art that captures their mind and heart, they have no excuses for not buying it — spontaneously. Elina is furnishing a house that is still under construction, Kati pampers herself after harsh covid-19 years, and Risto prefers sculptures over paintings, because one can have multiple of them without needing a museum-sized home. Has something changed in the cultural discourse of art, as emotionally justified impulse buys seem to be something that the buyers themselves want to share in the social media?
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Yritteliään kirjakustantaja Werner Söderströmin mukaan nimetyllä kadulla sijaitsee Reijo Ikosen sijoitusasunto, josta remonttitaitoinen porvoolaistenori on luonut ylellisen studion yhdelle. Stailasimme sen parhaillaan trendaavan bohotyylin hengessä, Söderströmin skandinaavisuutta kunnioittaen.
When opera singer Reijo Ikonen does not practice his voice or perform in a tour, he likes to renovate, and that’s what he has done in his studio on Werner Söderströminkatu street in Porvoo. In collaboration with Finform (Jokikatu 35, Porvoo), we added a Scandinavian boho touch to finish the interior, and collected five ”how-to” tips, so that you can free your inner bohemian as well. Would you like to buy the apartment? It’s for sale.
WOOL FOR THE COOL(EST)
Artesaanin studiolla syntyy lanka, joka tähtää luksustuotteeksi globaaleille markkinoille. Tausta Suomi-designin markkinoinnissa ei ole haitaksi, sanoo Eija Ericsson, joka tahtoo purkaa käsityöläisyyteen liittyviä kotikutoisia mielikuvia.
For Eija Ericsson, bringing together devotion, craftsmanship and an unapologetic boss lady attitude is what being an artisan is all about. The yarn brand of Ericsson and her business partner, Minni Heikkilä, stems from the current trend of knitting and what is called ”new luxury”: spending one’s money for something that is not for everybody, but for those who know how to stand out within their own tribe — in this case, among the new generation of knitters, the hygge people. The hand-dyed yarns, handicraft, is only the starting point for the company, which communicates its philosophy through top-notch design and a combined studio and store located in Porvoo. After all, we are not surprised how they ended up to this: Ericsson used to work in Design District Helsinki, which is the headquarters of design marketing in Finland.
THE WORLD OF PINK AND WHITE
Taidetehtaan taiteilijaresidenssissä työskentelee jatkuvasti ulkomaalaisia taiteilijoita, joiden oleskelu Porvoossa jää paikallisilta pimentoon. Yksi heistä on yhdysvaltalainen Brian Mehr, joka Porvoon-jaksonsa aikana säveltää kamarimusiikkia pianolle ja sellolle.
Brian Mehr is a former ballet pianist and a composer, whose latest album, ”Olemus”, has a Finnish name. Hailing from Minnesota, Mehr is an artist-in-residence at Art Factory, Porvoo. Each morning, Mehr goes to one of the galleries of the art hall, where the only piano of the building is located. Is it everything our city can offer to an artist, who has turned fascinating Finnish words such as ”Luumu”, ”Kaamos” and ”Kuura” into a Chopin-like music? The Head of Local Education and Culture Department, Sari Gustafsson, and the Culture Service Manager, Susann Hartman, answer the question on behalf of the city of Porvoo.
THE GOLD OF NAPLES

A restaurant owner Mika Gehör was born in the Arctic Cirle, and started his career at the heart of Finnish accommodation and catering services, Lapland. Arguing that he has lived four lives following the waves of restaurant trends and his own inner compass, he is now a father of two Porvoo-based restaurants: Bistro Gusfaf, a classy French-style bistrot, and Trattoria Nonna Sophia, which is a praise for home cooking tradition of Italian grandmothers. Trusting in tried-and-true, Gehör — advised in his career by the legendary food entrepreneurs Raimo Pekkonen and Heimo Keskinen — tells for Riverå Magazine how to create successful restaurant concepts that speak to clients throughout the seasons. The secret is to combine global trends with the preferences of the local clientele, says Gehör, who has named his latest restaurant after Sophia Loren.

Pirjo Koskelainen myy sitä enemmän kuin kukaan muu Suomessa. Boheemin romantikon omaan vaatekaappiin syreeninvärinen silkki löysi tiensä jo ennen kuin siitä tuli bisnes.
When one wants to experience the nostalgic feeling of Parisian left-bank boutiques in Porvoo, Pirjo Koskelainen’s Annanstyle is the place to go. Selling romantic pieces of clothing with recognizable artistic and bohemian twist, Annanstyle is famous for the Swedish brand Ewa i Walla. Koskelainen is a super seller among the Ewa i Walla retailers in Finland, and her own story is tightly connected to the brand, as she found her true calling through its design. During a day in the boutique, we learned that many of Koskelainen’s customers are creatives yearning to communicate the essence of their individuality by choosing a look that celebrates uniqueness and self-expression.
TO THE MOON (AND BACK)
Benecolin menestystarina nosti Jussi Hirvelän Wall Street Journalin kanteen ja Financial Timesin sivuille. Suomen ensimmäisiin brändijohtajiin lukeutuva Hirvelä on nykyisin betonibisneksen toisintekijä, joka pakottaa kilpailijat reagoimaan luovuuden vastaiskuun alalla.
One of the biggest innovations ever made in the Finnish food industry, Benecol, is titled to Tatu Miettinen, Ingmar Wester and Hannu Vanhanen, three remarkable Finnish scientists, but there is one person usually left out of the story: Jussi Hirvelä, a brand manager now working for Luja Group, one of the most reputable Finnish construction companies. In this interview, Hirvelä — featured also by Wall Street Journal and Financial Times — talks about thinking outside the box, the economic importance of innovations, and how to make them happen by leading professionals of the creative field in a way that enhances their most valuable asset, the creativity itself. Having a strong green ethics, Hirvelä lives nowadays in Old Porvoo, and is a regular of Cellar Café — a meeting point for many culture-oriented locals. If he is not in the metaverse or creating endless new contents for his YouTube channels, you can most likely find him there.

Luovuudella ei välttämättä osata nähdä arvoa, koska se ei ole materiaalista ja kosketettavaa. Sillä on kuitenkin arvo neliöille. Luovuus ei ole arvoa tässä hetkessä, vaan tulevaisuuden arvoa, joka luodaan tiettyyn kohtaan. Se kasvaa ajassa.
Taidetehtaan residenssin kohdalla voi kysyä, miten se voisi toimia paremmin taiteen startup-ympäristönä. Miten saisimme sinne enemmän heitä, jotka eivät vielä pärjää omilla siivillään? Toivoisin myös näkeväni poikkitaiteellisia yhteistöitä sekä taiteen ja tieteen vuorovaikutusta. Kokeilevat, rajoja ylittävät taiteilijat löytävät usein eniten käsittelytapoja yhteiskunnallisiin ongelmiin.
Yleisön voi olla vaikea hahmottaa, miksi residenssejä on olemassa: mitä paikalliset niistä saavat ja mitä taiteilija saa. On tuotava paremmin esille syitä, joiden vuoksi toimintaa järjestetään. Tarkoitus on, että taiteilijoiden mukanaan tuomat kansainväliset sisällöt avaavat ikkunoita myös porvoolaisille taiteen ja kulttuurin kuluttajille.
Joskus teosmateriaalit päätyvät asusteiksi, kuten Nalle Puh -vyölaukku, joka löytyi kierrätyskeskuksesta hankkimieni pehmolelujen joukosta tehdessäni Pehmopenkki –taideteosta Tallinnan Telliskivessä. Olin toteuttanut vastaavia penkkejä aiemmin eri puolilla Suomea. Katutaideteokset on tarkoitettu osallistuttaviksi. Taustalla on kysymys siitä, ketkä käyvät gallerioissa, ja miksei taidetta voisi olla enemmän osana arjen ympäristöjä.
Kuratointi on tuntunut luontevalta alusta asti. Kun asiakas tulee työhuoneelleni, näen heti mielessäni, mitkä muut teokset voisivat sopia omien töitteni rinnalle. On kauhea ajatus, ettei asiakas tietäisi, mitä muutakin on olemassa. Siksi nostan aina kollegoita esille, ja laajemminkin sitä, mitä Suomessa osataan. Se on myös yksi tapa poistaa työn yksinäisyyttä.
