The first issue of Riverå Slow Local Urban Magazine, a biannual print magazine published in Porvoo, Finland, was released in March 2022. Representing slow journalism from a local point of view, Riverå targets on urban culture: city, people, phenomena.
In the issue 1/2022, we asked local artists and entrepreneurs to imagine the future of nationally remarkable, historically unique, and cosmopolitan-minded city of Porvoo. These creative locals and active citizens gave their advice on innovative, sustainable, and successful decade to come.

Mr. Niko Lehto, the former representative of the Finnish National Chef Team, is the co-owner of Restaurant Vår, with his business partner, Ms. Marjo Lindberg. A tiny fine dining restaurant close to Porvoo Old Town is located in the former caramel fabric of Brunberg, the most iconic brand of the city, and now it’s even more: Lehto, a trained carpenter, has created a zen-like, Scandinavian interior together with designer Isa Niiranen. Vår’s mission is to work with local farmers and serve seasonal food, being part of a new urban community that supports other small businesses in the neighbourhood.

Johanna Kunelius on kierrätysmateriaaleihin erikoistunut tekstiilitaiteilija, joka pukeutuu isänsä vihkipukuun siinä missä teinivuosiensa huppariin. Marimekolle Metro-kankaan suunnitelleelle Kuneliukselle itärata on muutakin kuin futurismia.

Ms. Johanna Kunelius is a textile artist known for her street art, and for the art exhibitions held in Gallery Wanha Kappalaisentalo in Porvoo’s Raatihuoneetori square. On this issue, she is modeling in our editorial, which focuses on carbon-neutral fashion. Kunelius is a vintage enthusiast, who finds her clothes either from the flea markets or the closets of her relatives. Having no issue of wearing her father’s wedding suit, a blouse that was bought to her when she was 11, or a beanie left by a non-match Tinder date, Kunelius has created a distinguished style known by her neighbours and other locals. On the photography by Annika Blåfield, Kunelius is posing with her artwork from several exhibitions and other cultural events.

Carlo Rotkirch on uuden sukupolven tatuointitaiteilija, joka on kotonaan vanhankaupungin putiikki-idyllin keskellä. Häntä ei haittaisi, jos muutkin nuoret yrittäjät toisivat ostoskadun liiketoimintaan dynamiittia.

Mr. Carlo Rotkirch, half Finnish-Swedish, half Italian tattoo artist, has both lived in Porvoo Old Town and traveled around the world for most of his life. A 27-years-old has based his life choices on the maximum level of freedom, but entrepreneurship has also tied him to Old Town, where he specializes in Chicano style tattoos, one of the most famous styles in the world of tattooing. Being the only tattoo artist of Old Town, Rotkirch has accustomed to live side-by-side with small, idyllic boutiques, with very different customers compared to his own. However, somewhat of an Italian soul, municipal politics gets Rotkirch flamed, especially when talking about the slow pace of city development.

Ms. Tiia Vertanen is one of the few top cocktail masters in Finland, and among them, one of the even fewer women. She has worked in Helsinki at the bistrot Bardot, owned by a Michelin chef Hans Välimäki, and before that, at Runar Bar – a cocktail heaven of Hotel F6, which is nominated on the list of World’s 5o Best Restaurants and Bars. In Porvoo, Vertanen has created the bar concept and the signature cocktail menu for Runo Hotel Porvoo, a design boutique hotel at the Rihkamatori square. Being a horse rider for ten years for the world’s best jump riders, Vertanen has taken part of the parties of the celebrity sportsmen and women, and learned what the most demanding customers expect from their drink, food, service, and overall restaurant experience. When innovating new cocktails, Vertanen is searching for inspiration from what she loves the most: a very good Champagne.

Ms. Jutta Suutari-Hoikkala, a Finnish-Swedish from Kotka, grew up in the Scandinavia’s leading commercial rose garden of 1990’s, established by her grandfather. Becoming a top grower and seller required traveling in Sweden, Denmark, and The Netherlands – the biggest flower producers of the era. Suutari-Hoikkala has continued the family tradition of mixing local and global knowledge while developing her own business, a concept store Finform, which focuses on Scandinavian design understood in a broad manner: giving the sustainable objects of everyday life a fine and functional form.

Viulunsoittajaa on vaikea tuoda insinöörin rinnalle, jollei siitä ole aiempaa kokemusta. Kansainvälisesti on kuitenkin näyttöä, että yhteinen kieli ja intressit löydetään parhaiten, kun saman katon alle — tai edes samaan kortteliin — kootaan eri alojen osaamista.
Studio-käsite on minulle tärkeä, sillä emme ole lankakauppa. Sanassa on samoja viboja kuin loftissa. Englanniksi studio tarkoittaa myös yksiötä. Se voi siis merkitä ateljeen ohella kotia. Toivon, että tänne voisi tulla kuin kotiinsa: ei vain ostamaan, vaan myös neulomaan, hypistelemään lankoja ja rupattelemaan.
Olisin halunnut elää silloin, kun eri alat kohtasivat. Ihmiset elivät yhteisessä kosketuskohdassa, josta syntyi uutta: ideoita, joista ei pystynyt sanomaan, kenelle ne kuuluivat. Se ei olisi tapahtunut, jolleivät kaikki olisi olleet paikalla yhtä aikaa. Ajattelen sitä aina, kun kävelen Kämpin ohitse. Miksi emme enää tee niin? Elämme kuitenkin kaikki samassa yhteiskunnassa.
Näen hotelliympäristön kiinteistönä, jossa harjoitetaan operatiivista toimintaa luomalla maksimituotto joka neliölle. Operatiivisilla toiminnoilla ympäristöön voidaan luoda luovuuden kehtoja: taidegallerioita, taiteen luomisen tiloja, studioita, käsityöpajoja, eläviä yhteisöjä.
Kuvaisin Ewa Iwallaa niin, että Ewa tekee mitä haluaa ja muut seuraavat perässä. Hän ei hirveästi välitä siitä, missä muoti milloinkin menee. Kuten haute couture -muotitalojen suunnittelijat, hän on edelläkävijä. Edelläkävijä tekee sitä, mikä kussakin ajassa ja hetkessä syntyy luontaisesti, ei sitä, mitä muutkin tekevät tänä talvena tai kesänä.
Avoimuus on luovuuden tärkein yksittäinen osatekijä. Syntyessään ihmisellä ei ole mitään rajoitteita, vaan kasvamme laatikkoon vähitellen. Se, ettei suostu yhdeksi harmaapukuiseksi mieheksi harmaapukuisten joukossa, vaatii rohkeutta. Pitämällä oman linjansa voi rohkaista muitakin kokeilukulttuuriin. Sen ydin on ajatus, että jos menee pieleen, niin sitten menee, mutta yllättävän usein myös onnistuu.
